Welcome to Lori Whitlock's September Blog Hop. Along the way you will see some great Back to School or Fall inspired projects.
My project was created for that special teacher in mind. An A2 tab card and a cute little purse which can double as a small treat or gift card holder, will put a smile on her first day of the school year.
Both the card and the purse were created from files that I changed just a bit to better suit my projects needs.
This cute little purse was created from the Owl Purse file. I omitted the owl face and added some fun school themed die cuts.
The A+ and teacher words were created by welding letters together and when I cut out the word teacher, I realized that it was flexible enough to curve around the apple.
My card has a few additions to the original file. I added the ruler border and the pencil die cut. The Welcome Back banner was created by taking the words from another school file and filling them in with color, then arranging them on the banner included in the card file and doing a print and cut.
Whenever I create die cuts that have multiple pieces, I always create a mat for the pieces by making a second copy and welding those pieces together. That way, when I cut out all those little pieces, I can arrange and attach them to a base. It makes is a lot easier to keep everything together and place your final die cut where you want it.
Well, there's a couple more things that you will want to know about before you hop to the next design team member. Lori has a couple of giveaways and you can learn all about them on her blog. I am really excited about this new Silhouette Stamping material

I already had a post schedule for Tuesday so I had to wait until today to tell you about the team up with Petaloo and Bella Blvd.
We are having a party all week at the Petaloo blog, sharing projects for birthdays. Home decor, gifts and gift bags, cards, anything to do with birthdays. The Bella Blvd design team is also sharing their birthday projects using Petaloo flowers too so you'll want to stop by their blog as well for more inspiration and of course more chances to win.
So I am going to share a little sneak peek with you here so you'll have even more of an incentive to hop on over to the Petaloo blog. :)
Have a great day and have fun soaking up all of the beautiful projects from both teams.
Welcome to Tuesday's with Lori Whitlock. I have some cute Easter ideas for you and a short step-by-step Silhouette tutorial on how to create the mat on the flap of the envelope. I love making Easter projects and as soon as I saw the Chick Candy Dispenser, I knew that I just had to cut it out.
I followed Lori's instructions here on her YouTube Channel to put it together and then added a few of my own embellishments. Don't you just love googly eyes? I think that they add so much personality to my little chick.
The front of the box opens up to reveal your treat of choice. I had just picked up these yummy Hershey's Kisses in Easter colors. The front will close and then you carry the box around by the handle at the top.
I added the feathers on the back of the box. I had to use some really good glue to get them to stick but once they were dry everything was fine. I used orange glitter paper on the beak and the feet. Sometimes, those little details can really make a project pop!
You can't have a treat box without a card, can you? So I looked through Lori's card files and found this one which I think is perfect. It gave me a way to incorporate the cardstock that I used on the chick into the card so everything is matching!! I love how simple it is too.
And since it was so easy to cut out this card, I decided to make a matching envelope. Again, I used the same yellow cardstock to cut it out. What fun to have a bright yellow envelope. I used the fancy envelope. I love the beautiful flap. Because I wanted to dress it up even more, I cut out a mat for my flap.
So here is an easy way to make a mat for your envelope.
Open up the envelope that you are using. Next, click the knife tool and cut the flap off. Start at the top of the envelope at the score line. Click your mouse at the beginning of the cut and keep holding the mouse down as you scroll down the score line. Once you reach the bottom of the flap, let go off your mouse.
At this point you will be able to click on the larger piece of the envelope and seperate it from the flap. Delete the larger piece of the envelope. You won't need it anymore.
Click the the Offset tool in the top right hand menu. Then click the flap on your mat. Go back to the Offset panel and click Internal Offset. Then change the amount of Offset Distance. The amount to offset it is a personal preference but I usually dial mine in anywhere in between .07-.1 When you are happy with the offset amount, click apply.
You should then have two seperate pieces. Pull the smaller of the two pieces away with your mouse and delete the larger. The smaller piece is your mat and you will be able to cut it out in a different color than your envelope if you like for a fun, dramatic embellishment.
Thanks for stopping by today. I hope you can use the Silhouette tutorial on your next envelope.
If you are interested in learning more about what your Silhouette can do, please check out my new class at My Creative Classroom. It is called Creative Silhouette Series: Cards. I'm a new teacher at MCC and it's also my first online class so I am really excited. The class starts this Wednesday, March 13, 2013. I hope to see you there.
My last Valentine post for the year is all about this gorgeous heart shaped box that I cut from the Heart Shaped Box file in Lori Whitlock's shop. I love how it turned out, especially using Lori's Love Story paper collection. The file comes in two pieces. The top parts are in one file, and the bottom parts in another. I used the same papers for both top parts but it might look really cute if I had used two different ones.
Another cut file I used was the 3D Flower Set 3. To create this flower I used a fun digital/hybrid technique. Echo Park also releases a digital version of their collections. Not only do they have all of the papers and embellishments in the digital version, they also include the matching plain cardstock in matching colors.
This is where the fun starts!! You might have heard that you can fill your digital die cut files with colors and patterns, but did you know that you can fill the shapes with digital pattern paper?? Sound intriguing?
Well, this is how you do it. Open up the file on your computer that contains the digital paper files that you want to use. Leave the window open and make sure that it is pushed to the side and you can see the paper's thumbnail you want to use. Open up your Silhouette program and place the files that you want to cut on your mat. Then take your cursor over to the file window and click and drag the digital paper file on top of the digital cut file. It might take a second but you will see your cut file being filled in with the digital paper. You have now created a print and cut file. The next step is to make sure that the Registration Marks are turned on. You will need them to print on the paper along with the flowers so that when you put the paper on the mat to cut it will be able to use them to "see" where to cut. Print the file and then place on the mat to cut.
I added a black satin ribbon to finish off the box. I love the color scheme of this paper collection and the black bow really looks good against those bright pinks.
Here is the inside of the box. The files are set up so that you also have a second bottom or top piece to cover all of the seams. This box is really easy and fun to create. It is plenty big enough to put candy or a small gift in. I also think that this box would make a great favor box at a wedding. Just size it down so that it would fit in your hand and fill it with rice, or bubble jars, or candies.
Here is a little preview of the projects that I created for the Petaloo/Authentique blog hop this week. There is a chance to win a huge prize package each day so head over to the Petaloo blog and see what you need to do to be entered to win. I also share more pictures of my project and how I created them.
Wow, this is my second post of the day. If you are looking for my Petaloo project, go here.
If you need a couple of gift card holders quick but want them to look like you took hours to make, then the Matchbox gift card holder is just what you need. They are super easy to cut out and put together and they look adorable and oh so fancy. All of the files you need are in Lori Whitlock's shop!
I made three gift card holders and I love that with the same file and a few extra embellishments, I can make them all very different. The paper that I used to make all of them is Lori Whitlock's This N' That Christmas for Echo Park.
Please excuse the nasty camera dust spots on my project. I usually catch and fix them but this one slipped through the cracks. I promise that stunning Print and Cut, Christmas sayings label does not look like that in real life. I used a couple of different Print and Cut files for my gift card holders. If you haven't tried the print and cut feature, you really need to take a try. It just takes a couple of steps.
Arrange what you want to print and cut onto the Silhouette screen. If you have a regular printer that holds 8 1/2 x 11 inch paper, make sure to change the mat size to letter. I have a Cameo, which is a 12 x 12 size machine so my directions for the mat size are for that machine.
Click the show registration marks.
Click the send to Silhouette or cut button
A menu will ask you whether you want to print or skip the printing. You'll want to click the print option.
The labels will print and so will the registration marks.
Then take your paper and lay it on your mat, putting the top left corner of the paper in the top left hand corner of the Silhouette mat.
The menu will know say, detect registration marks automatically or manually. You will want to choose automatically.
Then click Cut. The machine will move over the marks on your paper, determining where to start cutting. Then the machine will cut around your printed pieces exactly where it should.
It's magic, it's fun, and you really need to try it. Plus it makes everything so polished and professional.
I wanted to tell you a little bit about this Poinsettia flower. Another stunning file and so easy. Basically you just cut 1 of each size in red and 1 of the largest size in green. I inked the edges with some red ink for dimension and when I put all of the pieces together I used foam adhesive between the flower layers for added dimension. The leaf cut was not adhered using foam. That piece I just adhere flat to the bottom and largest of the red petals.
The holes that you see on the cover are part of the file. All of the pieces have holes in them that line up so that you can hold it all together with a ribbon, twine, or even brads. Each of my gift card holders is put togther with a different kind of embellishment. I love that there is no glue required. The only glue you need is some to close the pocket up and whatever you might need for the embellishments.
Here are some pictures of the insides of the gift card holder. The file comes with two pockets, so if you want to give more than one gift card you can. You are able to include one or two pockets and it doesn't change the design. I only used one gift card holder on the above card.
And I used two pockets on this one. I also added some scallop borders to the first pocket. That was just an extra little piece that I cut out and glued in the top part of the pocket.
Here is a little closer view of the double pocket and scallop trim.
This is what the Matchbook Cover Gift Card Holder looks like opened up straight up and down. I had a little trouble photographing them while propped up but hopefully you get the idea.
Here is a side view of the matchbook closed. Well I could go on and on about these adorable little Matchbook Gift Card Holders but I guess I better get back to my craft room where I might just whip up a couple more.
